Frequently asked questions

What is an AI governance framework?

An AI governance framework defines the policies, roles, processes and controls that determine how AI is developed, deployed and monitored in your organisation — including who is accountable, how risks are assessed, and how decisions made by AI systems are audited.

Does UAE PDPL apply to AI systems?

Yes. Any AI system that processes personal data of UAE residents is subject to UAE PDPL. This includes data used for training, inference and logging. Data minimisation, purpose limitation and data subject rights must be built into the system design, not added later.

What AI governance is required before going live in the UAE?

At a minimum: documented data lineage, a risk assessment, a defined accountability owner, an escalation path for AI errors, and a record of processing under UAE PDPL. For government entities, additional requirements under the UAE National AI Strategy apply.

How does AI governance differ from IT governance?

IT governance covers systems and infrastructure. AI governance covers decisions made by those systems — their fairness, accuracy, explainability and auditability. An AI model can comply with all IT controls and still produce biased, unreliable or legally non-compliant outputs.
